Motorola’s BSRs and how to fight with them!
Some more interesting facts about Motorola's BSRs. Some a day I've found out that no one from our SurfBoard cable modems are working properly. All of them are in "online" state but they doesn't generate any IP-traffic. I cann't figure out what happens. It is still possible to do a ping command via docsis level (docsis ping) from the BSR, but usual ICMP ping doesn't work - any modem doesn't respond. The problem is solving by reloading the BSR only.
That problem happens absolutely randomly. No any system. Just BANG! - and you have hundreds of modems that doesn't work! And the only one thing you can to do - is to reload your BSR (and this process is not so quick).
I've upgrade (and downgrade too) BSR's firmware to different versions 30, 40, 46, 49 - no any changes. The BSR can work 3 hours or 5 minutes - and then fails. Without fails it works for 20-24 hours (no more).
I've found out that if I block any active connections to cable net (behind the BSR), the problem is going out. It was a temporary solve.
This situation was for about eight months. What to do - no any idea.
I have to say I've wrote to Motorola's support about that situation but unfortunately they doesn't work with customers directly. If we have a problem we should report to Motorola's partners in our region about that. The partners we should to report our troubles to is Romsat company. "We have no idea. try to upgrade/downgrade the firmware. etc." - that's all what I've received from Romsat as a response to our reports to them.
This problem just makes me sick. This is what I've found once a day on an Internet forum:

Hi again, Your info is not full:
What is state on modem in BSR?
# show cable modem - what modem state
Upstream SNR
# sh controler cable X/X upstream Y
(QPSK USNR > 19dB?, 16QAM USNR > 25dB?)
Downstream SNR
Look in cable modem - web page (if remote snmp request not working)
If Host authorazation on enabled - watch dhcp server log ....
Any result after restart modem from Power Suply?
Any result after dhcp renew in PC?
In BSR log file anything?
# show log
What is software version? Last i know is:

So, if you have some strange problems with your BSR - check all what you can, but it can be just a broken firmware. If you have such a trouble with your Motorola BSR2000 try to use firmware version 1.0.0P49.03.
